Surajkund Lake, Faridabad, Haryana

Surajkund Lake is an old reservoir that lies near Anangpur Dam; this artificial lake is present amidst breathtaking backdrop of Aravallis. The Kund is constructed in the shape of a semicircular embankment and is believed to be built by Suraj Pal, a Tomar ruler. As this ruler was a staunch devotee of the Sun God, a temple dedicated to the Sun has been built near the Kund. It has got its name from Surajkund village which lies near it.

The water of Surajkund Lake gets dried in the summers and gets fed by the Monsoon rainfall. The lake water gets drained in the foothills of the Aravallis. Apart from rain water, the lake gets watered from a small stream in the north-west direction.

History and Archeology

According to beliefs, Tomars were responsible for constructing the Lal Kot area near Surajkund Lake. Suraj Pal constructed the reservoir for his daughter. Renovated by Feroz Shah Tughlaq, this pool of water was provided with several steps of stones. A small Garhi or cave was also built in the vicinity of the Sun Temple. From the excavations at the site, a large number of stone relics have been recovered. These relics consist of microliths and paleolithic; this indicates the presence of pre-historic civilization at this site.

The Kund covers an area of 99 acres; the place overlooks a beautiful imagery. This lake is also known by the name of Peacock Lake which is attributed to its picturesque beauty. One can pursue a number of activities here; strolls under shady trees, community-seeing, watching beautiful avifauna, and enjoying refreshing drinks are some of the leisure activities that can be enjoyed by the tourists.
