The pleasant and lush green lawns welcome you with pride and divinity. The flowers spread their fragrance to invite you in. Such a beautiful vista to be in; and the divinity of Lord Ganesha bestow its blessings. What place could it be? – None other than the wonderful Saras Baug in Pune. The term Baug means garden. From the Swargate, a famous landmark of Pune, the Saras Baug lays at a distance of just 1 km. Tourists from all over the world drop in here to witness the abundant greens and the blooming blossoms of the Saras Baug. The thing for which the place is more popular is the Ganesha Temple, also called the Ganpati Math, which  cradles in the premises of the garden.

The make up

The present day Saras Baug stands in a place where previously stilled a small lake. Due to natural weather conditions, the water of the lake dried up leaving behind an empty patch of land. The Saras Baug was then built up in the original plot of the lake. The Ganpati Temple dates back to the times of Madhavrao Peshwa. It is said that there had occurred a natural emerging of a rock in slight shape of Lord Ganesh, which was later transformed into a well- carved Ganesh Murti (idol), which was later placed in the temple built for it. This temple hangs on the very top of a hillock, near the previous Lake. Later, when the Saras Baug in Pune was built, the temple came to be known as a component of the campus of the garden. There is a small bridge like structure made up of bamboos and stone carries one to and from between the temple and the garden.

What magnetizes here?

As well as visiting to the Saras Baug in Pune as devotees of Lord Ganesha, to offer prayers and seek blessings, the garden is also popular as a great picnic spot. The brilliantly manicured gardens make the place look like an exquisitely landscaped scenery. And the Ganpati Temple completes by perfectly fitting in the frame. Various festivals, occurring monthly and yearly, are celebrated in a grand way in the Ganesh Temple of Saras Baug in Pune. Devotees of Lord Ganesh come from far and wide to this place to become a part of the festivities. On usual days, evenings are the best time to visit the garden. The true calmness and cool of the place is experienced during the last few hours before the sun disappears, only to appear back the next morning.

Mornings just remind me that the locally resident people also come to Saras Baug in Pune for morning strolls, walks and jogs. The lush greenery invites the aged to rest upon and feel the magnetism of two mothers – Mother Nature and Mother Earth!
