Kummi dance is belongs to the Tamil Nadu state’s village dance forms. This dance type is very essential and it is also historical. This dance was type came into existence when not even musical instruments were available. This is woman oriented dance form. Kummi dance of Tamil Nadu contains numbers of types like Kulavai kummi, Poonthatti kummi, Mulaipari Kummi and Deepa Kummi etc.

The women dancers of Kummi, perform the dance with rhythmic sound of clap. On the beginning of Kummi performance, all dancers form a circle and start the dance by clapping in rhythm. Generally Kummi dance is practiced while the Festivals of temple, family functions and famous Pongal festival. Especially on the occasion of girl childbirth, they perform the Kummi dance as a celebration. In every performance, the beginning of the song always done through the main woman, other women repeated the same line of song. Kummi dance is a way of expressing the happiness and joy for the village or rural People of the Tamil Nadu state, and it is also a source of entertainment for them.
