Koodalmanikyam Temple in Irinjalakuda is a famous temple that is dedicated to Bharata, the brother of Rama. The temple is distinguished for being the only place of worship of this deity in India. Another unique feature of the place is that it houses a single idol as compared to other Hindu temples are known for the worship of several gods at one place. In fact, the temple is among the four temples of Nalambalam, the other three being devoted to Rama, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna (all being brothers in Ramayana).
Temple architecture
Built in Kerala style, Koodalmanikyam Temple has a majestic gopuram which is built with tiled roof. The gopuram is carved with a number of images. As you enter the premises, you will notice that the outer portion is built in the shape of a quadrangle. Fantastic gateways are present on the walls in east, west and south directions. The gigantic porches that are quite spacious will make ways for you to reach the temple premises.
The circular sanctum is adorned with a series of copper plates. The architectural beauty of the temple is aggravated by the presence of a golden crown. As your eyes are set on this six foot high piece of attraction, you will surely applaud it. The south portion of the temple has the famous Koothambalam, a hall for presenting dramatic arts that are peculiar to Kerala. The art forms include Koodiyattam and Koothu. The hall is divided into two parts, one is reserved for performances by the artists, and the other is kept for the audience. The stage is lit properly and is decorated with leaves and flowers. Men belonging to Chakyar spell bound the audience by their lovely performances.
The walls of Koodalmanikyam Temple carry carvings in stone and wood, if you adore art and Architecture; you are going to fall in love with the place. The temple is surrounded by four ponds, two of which are located outside the premises.
Historical references
The description of the temple can be found at a stone inscription belonging to the ninth century. Earlier the temple came under the administrative authority of Thachudaya Kaimal, who worked on behalf of the Maharaja of Travancore. But in the early 70s, power was taken way by Kerala government and entrusted to a committee to manage the temple.
Annual Festival
Celebrated in the months of April and May, this annual festival of Koodalmanikyam Temple is held for ten days. On the first day of the festivities, a flag is hoisted and coincides with the appearance of special pattern of stars in the sky. A procession of caparisoned elephants is the main feature; this procession takes place on every single day of the festival. In total, there are 17 elephants that take part; baby elephants are made to stand on either side of the image of the deity. The headdresses of 7 of these elephants are made of gold, the other ten are worn the silver ones. An orchestra of Music from a set of 5 instruments characterizes the last two days of the event.

The best time to visit Koodalmanikyam Temple is during the post-monsoon and winter months, from October to February, when the weather is comfortable for temple visits and outdoor exploration. This period also coincides with many important festivals celebrated at the temple.
