Kolleru Lake, Andhra Pradesh

Kolleru Lake is formed by the deltas of Krishna and Godavari which are very wide. This is the largest lake for fresh water in the whole country. It is situated at a distance of 95 kms from Vijayawada. During the season of monsoons the lake spreads around 260 sq kms.

The lake gets water from four rivers that include Tammileru, Budameru, Yerrakalva and Tammileru and 18 drains. The water for this lake is then flowed away into the Bay of Bengal and this is done every six months through an outlet known as ‘upputeru’.

A Pelican Refuge:

The various species of birds are been magnetized towards this lake and now it is been converted into a bird sanctuary known as “Kolleru Sanctuary”. Kolleru is the biggest pelican haven and is regarded as the paradise for the migratory birds. This lake supports rich diversity and high biomass of plankton, fish which becomes the source for birds as food. Pelicans come here during the period of nesting to bring up their young. The great activity of these birds can be seen during winter season.

Safe Trip:

  • The visitors who come to this place should take all the precautions for the total enjoyment.
  • There should be a medicated kit carried along with you.
  • The pair of extra clothes, good shoes and some food can be carried.
  • Make sure than the left over food is not throw anywhere.

In Eluru and Vijayawada, there are Forest Rest Houses available. People can also take accommodation in the hotels that are in Vijayawada. These hotels provide good accommodation and have good rooms and good service available. The food in the hotels and in the restaurants near the city is available.
