Gangotri Dham cradled at an altitude of 3415m above the sea level amid the Garhwal Himalayas is an auspicious pilgrimage destination for all Hindus. It is one of the ‘Chardham’ of the Chota Chardham circuit. At the holy shrine of Gangotri, Goddess Ganga, the river goddess is worshipped as a ‘Mother’ or a ‘Devi’. The maximum temperature of the region hovers around 10-15 degree centigrade on an average while minimum temperatures usually drop below zero degrees. You need to carry woolen garments to Gangotri almost all through the year.
Gangotri Seasonal Weather Conditions
Weather conditions differ at Gangotri across the various seasons. The region experiences 3 different seasons; i.e. summers, Monsoons and winters in the course of a year.
Summers in Gangotri
Summers in Gangotri start around late April and last till mid June. Summer season in Gangotri is cool and pleasant. Daytime is sunny and warm and the weather remains most travel-friendly during the summer months. With the melting of snow, the region bursts to all colors of spring. On an average the maximum summer temperatures are around 20-25 degree centigrade
Monsoons in Gangotri
Monsoons arrive at Gangotri by end of June and continue till August. During the monsoon months the region receives moderate to heavy showers and that makes the region highly prone to landslides and sudden cloud bursts.
Winters in Gangotri
Once the monsoons end, Pre-winters span across months September and October. During that time though it is not fiercely cold yet one can feel a sharp cold crispiness in the air. Nights however may be pretty cold. From the month of November, winters start at Gangotri and continue up till late April. During that time temperatures swing down below the zero degree level; snowing starts and the cold becomes truly unbearable.
Best Time to Visit Gangotri
The ideal time to visit Gangotri Dham is around May-June and then again around September-October. The weather during this time remains the most travel-friendly as there’s no severity of cold and one can easily stroll around during day time without much discomfort though support of warm garments is a must.
