Coral Castle: History

The Coral Castle is known to have one of the glorious histories of all times. Edward Leedskalnin, a famous historical American of the Latvian ancestry, originally constructed this celebrated castle after his return from Latvia. The Latvian American completed the construction after a long period of twenty eight years. As per the study, it was found that Leedskalnin revealed of using only one equipment for the construction work and that was the perpetual motion holder. Even though Leedskalnin did not want any one to watch him while performing the castle’s construction work, there were some young individuals who managed to view him while working on the castle. These youth had reported saying that Leedskalnin made the cubes of coral to mobilize like the hydrogen balloons.

During the era of 1923, it was discovered that Leedskalnin primarily gave the name to the castle as ‘Rock Gate Park’ when he constructed the castle in the first place. Built in the famed city of Florida, the castle was settled on the land which was bought by Leedskalnin from Ruben Moser. Moser’s wife gave a helping hand in the construction work of Leedskalnin while he was struggling with tuberculosis disease. The non-island city of the United States of America, Florida City was an inaccessible site during that time. Margining the Everglades, a subtropical wetland region, Florida City was once one of the underdeveloped cities of the American land. The castle stayed at its old location for more than ten years and was eventually transported to its last location on the South Dixie Highway in city of Miami.

The decision of transporting the castle to the new location was made by Leedskalnin with a view to defend his secrecy when the discourse about the improvement of the land neighboring the castle region was aroused. Leedskalnin moved the artifacts and other contents of the castle to its latest location, which is nearly ten miles towards the north from the Florida City. It took around three years for Leedskalnin to completely transport the castle to its recent location. During the investigation operations of the castle, a sum of approximately $3,500 was found among the individual possessions of Leedskalnin.

Coral Castle: Edward Leedskalnin

Edward Leedskalnin, who was born in Livonia in January 12, 1887, was an active and outlandish character. Before his death in December 7, 1951, the amateur carver and statue maker did a wonder job of structuring the historical construction, the Coral Castle single handedly. The world knew Leedskalnin for his extraordinary hypothesis on magnetism. As per the promotional matter of the castle, Agnes Scuffs, Leedskalnin’s fiancée rejected him a day before their marriage in Latvia when she was just sixteen years old. Soon after, Leedskalnin left the American country. The investigation reports said that Leedskalnin was impulsively healed from a fatal tuberculosis disease expressing that the magnets had some kind of an impact on the disease. He was later attacked by advanced stomach cancer, which caused his death after 3 days in the hospital.

Leedskalnin did not stop the construction work and showed great courage working alone until he took his last breath in 1951. The coral portions, not among those which were moved from the primary area, but those which belong to the recent construction of the castle, were quarried on the structure just a couple of feet away from the southerly wall. In order to experience the splendid artifacts and structures of the castle, the visitors were initially charged about 10 cents by Leedskalnin. The only response that Leedskalnin gave when asked about the construction activity of the castle was “It’s not difficult if you know how.” The visitors use to get a chance to attend a castle tour initiated by Leedskalnin himself. The tour was generally performed at the second level of the castle. There are some spaces in the castle which were privately reserved for Leedskalnin.

Leedskalnin’s beloved ‘Sweet Sixteen’ was very close to his heart and that is one of the reasons why he use to refer to her when asked the reason for creating the brilliantly structured castle. ‘A Book in Every Home’ is Leedskalnin’s one of the best publications where he gives a reference to his Sweet Sixteen. In the publication, Leedskalnin expresses her more as an abstract or paragon rather than an actuality. However, when referred to the Latvian reports, it was revealed that Leedskalnin’s beloved was actually named as Hermīne Lūsis. Much of the income earned by Leedskalnin was through the castle tours, which he used to conduct for the viewers. Besides, the marketing of his theories about magnetic currents in the form of booklets or brochures also added to Leedskalnin’s income. The records unveil that Leedskalnin had sold some part of his 10 acre land possession, so as to build the U.S. Route 1 Highway.

Coral Castle: Construction & Artifacts

The Coral Castle has many interesting signs around its vicinity that are skillfully carved on the stones. At the front gate, there is a ‘Ring Bell Twice’ sign along with an another sign which says ‘Adm. 10c Drop Below’. On the other hand, the ‘Going to the Hospital’ was imprinted on one of the castle doors when he was on his way to the Miami hospital. In all, the castle incorporates approximately a thousand tons of stones which are widely used in the tower, furnishings, sculptures, and carvings of the castle. The castle is entirely constructed out of the oolitic limestone although it is referred to be made out of coral. The stone tables structured in the shape of a heart, rocking chairs (25 in number), throne, chairs appearing like crescent moons, beds, bathtubs, etc., are some of the incredible furnishings of the castle.

Besides, the elegant stones shaped in celestial planets and stars, sundial, fountains, barbecue, Polaris telescope, Leedskalnin’s living areas, obelisks, and castle tower are other attractions of the castle. The eight foot tall gate had been enigmatically revolving for several decades until it stopped operating in 1986.
