Badrinath is the last stop in the char Dham pilgrimage in Uttarakhand. The home of Lord Vishnu, Badrinath is located at a height of 3415 metres in Uttarakhand and sits close to the Neelkanth peak in Chamoli District. As with the other pilgrimage centres, Badrinath is open for 6 months starting summer and closes for the winter when the Lord shifts residence to Joshimath, his winter home in Narasimha Temple.
Badrinath Kapat Opening & Closing Dates 23
Opening Date 2023 | April – May 2023 |
Closing Date 2023 | Will be updated soon |
Opening Date
The priests of the temple consult almanacs and make the decision about opening the temple on a specific day in summer, each year. For 2023 the opening day is just two days after the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya. The priests usually decide on the auspicious Vasant Panchami day as to when to open the temple and when to close it for winter. 8 May is quite convenient for Hindu pilgrims since the Kedarnath temple opens on 3rd when you can visit it and then proceed to Badrinath to complete the last leg of the char Dham Yatra.
You will note that the opening dates of all the four temples in the Char Dham circuit usually fall around Akshay Tritiya, the third day of the lunar month of Vaisakh.
Closing Date
Priests at Badrinath fix the closing day on Vijayadashami and the closing day usually occurs a couple of days after Diwali. The idol is shifted to the Narasimha temple in Joshimath for the winter. Before the temple doors are closed the priests place a lamp before the idol in the sanctum and when the doors are opened in summer, it is found that the lamp still continues to burn. Hindus believe that Narad Muni continues the prayer services in the Badrinath temple during winter.
