The imperial collection of this museum was possible because of the humble effort by Maharaja Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III. He collected these valuable articles during his several international visits. The horde of paintings, however, happens to be the most unique collection of this museum. You will come across the paintings by renowned painter Raja Ravi Verma. All the portraits of royal painted by him will draw your attention invariably. The painting collection of Raja Ravi Verma also includes his forte which is essentially some of the famous scenes from Hindu mythology.
The stunning sculptures in marble and bronze are eye-catching. Some of these marble and bronze figures are representations of great masters in bronze and marble sculpting, which were created on order by Maharaja, while the others are the original work.
This vast museum stores great craftsmanship form various corners of the world. You can see the works of great Italian artist named Fellici. Fellici not only decorated the museum but also designed the palace of Lakshmi Vilas. You can have a look into intricacies of Japanese and Chinese sculptures at the Oriental Gallery of this museum.
History
This museum is placed within the premises of the Maharaja’s palace named Lakshmi Vilas. Previously this part of the palace was used as a school for the children of Maharaja.
