Situated in the heart of Delhi, India gate defines Delhi. India Gate finally culminated in 1931 after 10 years of its foundation and names of 90,000 soldiers inscribed on its walls. India Gate was built to pay homage to these 90,000 soldiers who sacrificed their lives during WWI and in Third Anglo-Afghan War. Designed by Edwin Lutyens, 42 metres tall India Gate is one of the largest war memorials in the country. Yellow and red sandstone along with granite was used to construct India Gate. India Gate resembles the Arc de Triomphe of Paris and Gateway of India of Mumbai.

When you visit India Gate you can see a flame underneath the archway which stays lit, known as Amar Jawan Jyoti. It was constructed after the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 in the memory of the martyrs.

Formerly known as Viceroy’s House, Rashtrapati Bhawan or President House is the official residence of the President of India. Again designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, this marvelous President Estate includes president’s residence, halls, guest rooms, offices, museum and gardens which is spread over an area of 330 acres. Rashtrapati Bhawan is one of the largest residential complexes in the world built for a head of the state, in terms of its size, immensity and its splendor.

The construction of former Viceroy’s House started in 1914 after Delhi Durbar and completed in the year 1929 with the employment of 29,000 workers. This breathtaking structure is the indomitable symbol of British imperialism.

The premises of the President House are divided into 3 circuits and can be accessed by pre booked visitors at specific time slots over the day. These timings and days can vary according to circuits.

Designed by British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, Parliament House or Sansad Bhawan is an iconic building and Mecca of Indian democracy. Sansad Bhawan comprises of a circular central hall, Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, a library hall and a museum. This circular building is inaugurated by Lord Irwin in 1927, then the Governor-General of India.

One cannot visit Sansad Bhavan without official permission, whether parliament is in session or not. You have to apply to the Parliament Secretariat to obtain a visitor’s pass. You can only visit public galleries by visitor’s pass. To visit central library, you have to give a letter of introduction from a MP to the Visitor’s reception on Raisina Road.

Red Fort

A UNESCO world heritage monument and seat of power and residence of Mughal emperors, Red Fort is an outstanding fortification built in 1638 by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. This marvelous architectural beauty was constructed of red sandstone. Red Fort was the primary residence of Mughal rulers for more than 200 years until 1857.

Midnight speech by Jawahar Lal Nehru on 14th August 1947 made it the politically vital spot in Indian History. After that Red Fort witness the Independence Day celebrations each year. In 2007, Red Fort has declared a UNESCO world heritage site. Maintained by Archaeological Survey of India, Red Fort Complex consists of massive walls and fortification, gates, Nahr-i-Behisht (Stream of Paradise), Diwan-i-Aam and Diwan-i-Khas, and the royal apartments.

Lahori Gate is the main entrance to Red Fort because it opens towards Lahore, Pakistan. Museums inside Red Fort, Bazaar and Light and Sound Show are the major attractions of the Red Fort. Light and Sound Show exhibit the history of Red Fort and Delhi for an hour every evening. The show starts at 6 PM and will be both in Hindi and English.

Popularly known as CP, Connaught Place is famous for its classy restaurants, bars, shops, and nightlife. Connaught Place ranked 5th amongst the most costly business spaces in the world. It is the headquarters of many Indian Business Firms and considered as one of the dominant heritage buildings in Delhi.

Named after the first Duke of Connaught, Prince Arthur, Connaught Place was completed in 1931 under the architectural plan of Robert Torr Russell. Very identical to the Royal Crescent in England, Connaught Place is a complete circle and has two concentric circles: the inner circle and outer circle. Rajiv Chowk metro station is built in the inner circle area under Central Park.

Connaught Place is shopper’s paradise. International as well as Indian brands showroom are available in CP for shopping enthusiasts. Jan Path Market and Palika Market are famous for cheap clothing. Qutub Minar

Second tallest minaret in India and tallest minaret in India made by red sandstone and marble, Qutab Minar is a UNESCO world heritage site combined with other monuments near it.  It is the tallest individual tower in the world which is located in Mehrauli area of the Capital. As a part of the Qutab complex, this tower is considered as the major tourist attraction of Delhi.

Consisted of five storeys, first three storeys are made of red sandstone while the upper two storeys are made of marble and sandstone. This reflects the variation in architectural styles which was due to the fact that Qutab Minar was constructed by three different rulers. Qitub-ud-Din Aibak was the one who started the construction but only able to construct the basement. Three storeys of the minaret were constructed by his successor Illtutmish and later Firoz Shah Tuglaq completed the minaret by adding last two storeys.

Apart from Qutab Minar, Qutab Complex consists of Alai Darwaja by Alauddin Khalji, 1600 years old Iron Pillar resisting corrosion, Qubbat-ul-Islam Mosque, and Alai Minar. You are going to dazzle by the extraordinary architecture of Qutab Complex which includes impeccable carvings on the wall, dome-like structures.

Qutab festival celebrated in the month of November- December can be a major throwback in your travel diary. This three-day festival consists of cultural shows and art forms which is organized by DTTDC and Sahitya Kala Parishad. Jantar Mantar

Jantar Mantar of Delhi is one of the five Major Jantar Mantar, constructed by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur. It is an astronomical observatory with 13 breathtaking architectonic astronomy apparatus. Located on the Sansad Marg, Jantar Mantar was built during the year 1724 but this observatory had faced a lot of decays by 1867. After the Jantar Mantar of Delhi, Jai Singh II had constructed more observatories in Varanasi, Mathura, Ujjain and Jaipur.

This observatory was constructed to anticipate the movement and timings of Sun, the planets, and the moon. Raja Jai Singh II himself erected this observatory due to his great interest in astronomy and to study the systems of astronomical observations. Major instruments of this observatory are the Ram Yantra, Mishra Yantra, the Samrat Yantra and the Jai Prakash. These instruments were mainly made of brick rubbles and then plastered with lime. But due to various decays, the instruments had gone through several repairs and restoration.

This magnificent observatory with the help of its instruments authorized the observer to note the position of heavenly bodies with their naked eye alone. However, due to the construction of tall buildings near Jantar Mantar, It can no longer be used perfectly. You can visit here to cherish the science of Indian astronomy and its magnificent structure.

Raj Ghat

Situated on the bank of River Yamuna, Raj Ghat is a cremation ground where Mahatma Gandhi was incinerated followed by his assassination in 1948. This place carries a great significance in the Indian history as it is a memorial to the father of our nation. It is a walled complex and Raj Ghat Gate opens to the Raj Ghat where the memorial area is located. Inside the memorial area, a black marble platform was built which symbolizes the place of Mahatma Gandhi’s cremation happened on 31st January 1948.

This open Marble platform is without a tomb and there is an everlasting flame lit at the end. The memorial is beautifully kept with lovely parks and Redstone paths. This red stone path will lead you to the memorial from walled enclosure but before that, you have to remove your footwear.

Apart from Mahatma Gandhi’s mausoleum, Raj Ghat area is also famous for memorials of other famous leaders like Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi etc. Shanti Van, memorial of Jawaharlal Nehru is located north of the Raj Ghat. Vijay Ghat, Shakti Sthal and, Veer Bhumi are the memorials of Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi respectively which are located near Raj Ghat.

Raj Ghat premises also has a museum called National Gandhi Museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. This Museum depicts his personal belongings like paintings, walking sticks, the shawl, dhoti, and one of the bullets that were used to assassinate him etc. The Museum also has a library which has a unique collection of all works about or by him.

Every Friday a remembrance ceremony is held. You can watch English show which starts from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM except for Thursdays. On Sundays, this show is shown at 3 PM in Hindi and at 5 PM in English.

Humayun’s Tomb

First Garden Tomb of the Indian subcontinent, Humayun’s Tomb is the tomb of the second Mughal Emperor Humayun. This magnificent piece of architecture was built by Humayun’s senior widow Bega Begum in 1570. It took 14 years to complete this masterpiece which is amongst the top places to visit in Delhi. Precursor of the splendid Taj Mahal, Humayun’s Tomb was designed by Mirak Mirza Ghiyas- a Persian architect.

Humayun’s Tomb was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1993 and after that, it went through various restoration programs. This tomb is located in the middle of a huge square Mughal garden called ‘Charbagh’ which has trivial water channels running through it. Apart from Humayun’s Tomb, this tomb is also house to the remains of several rulers of Mughal Dynasty like his son and successors of Shah Jahan and other subsequent Mughals. A Mix of Islamic and Persian architecture with modicum of Indian elegance too, this incredible Tomb set the tone for all later Mughal Architectures.

Near the main Tomb, there are various other smaller monuments. When you cross the main entrance, you will find Isa Khan Niyazi’s tomb on the west side which is even older than Humayun’s tomb. Nila Gumbad, Arab Sarai, Afsarwala tomb and mosque and Bu Halima’s tomb and garden are the other attractions of this complex.

Due to its architectural beauty and surroundings, Humayun’s tomb is unmistakably one of the most amazing works of Mughal Architecture.

Agrasen Ki Baoli

Also known as Ugrasen Ki Baoli, Agrasen ki Baoli is a step well in built order to preserve water during that time. Located in the heart of Delhi, this Baoli is on Hailey Road in CP which is surrounded by towering buildings. This well is 60 metre long and 15 metre wide and is a protected monument which is managed by Archaeological Survey of India. Agrasen Ki Baoli is a step well with 108 steps which emerges from the depth of the earth. This Baoli is masterpiece of ancient architecture which is perfect for photography enthusiasts.

As far as the construction of this well is concerned, there are a lot of legends and stories but it is said that this well was constructed by Maharaja Agrasen during Mahabharata time. Later it was rebuilt by Agrawal community in 14th century. Actually Agrawal community of 14th century traces its construction to Maharaja Agrasen. A mosque is located on south western side of the well standing on four pillars.

This Baoli became famous after the shooting of super hit movies like PK and Sultan. This place is famous for haunted stories and activities but it never confirmed to be true. Haunted or not, this place is must visit destination in Delhi. You can also visit this place to know more interesting stories and make it more compelling.

Purana Qila (Old Fort)

One of the oldest and magnificent forts in Delhi, Purana Quila, also known as Old Fort is the must visit place if you are in Delhi. It is said that the enormous gateways and walls were constructed by Humayun when he laid the foundation of his new capital, Dinpanah. But after that Sher Shah Suri of Sur dynasty defeated him in two consecutive battles and captured Delhi and Agra – two Mughal strongholds. Sher Shah Suri carried forward the work of Purana Quila and finally completed it in the 16th century. After the death of Sher Shah, Humayun recaptured Delhi.

This fort complex has a unique Mughal-Hindu-Afghan architecture which intrigues attention from tourists worldwide. Humayun used Sher Mandal as his library which is an octagonal red sandstone tower inside fort complex. It is evident from Mughal documents that Humayun died as a result of injuries from falling down from the stairs of Sher Mandal. Another magnificent structure inside the Purana Quila is Qila-i-kuhna Masjid.

Purana Quila also witnesses a series of excavations after Independence. One of the reports by ASI suggests that the Purana Quila stood on the site of ancient city of Indraprastha. Apart from this, ASI also finds various pottery and other handicrafts and art products which suggest the existence of civilization there before Old Fort was built.

Feroz Shah Kotla Fort

Feroz Shah Kotla Fort complex was built by Feroz Shah Tughlaq in order to make his capital Ferozabad in 1354. One of the oldest monuments in Delhi, this fort complex is enclosed with high walls and consists of beautiful gardens, step wells, palaces, madrasas, and mosques. When Tughlaqs transferred their capital from Tughlakabad to Firozabad due to the scarcity of water, this fort complex was built.

The entrance of the fort has a huge iron gate where a board bearing the name of Feroz Shah Tughlaq is attached. Fort complex is mainly in ruins but beautiful rose garden makes it a must-visit destination. One of the most eminent aspects of this complex is the Ashokan Pillar which is also known as Delhi-Topra pillar. This 13-metre tall pillar was erected above the palace complex of Feroz Shah Kotla which has the edicts of Ashoka’s principles.  Apart from garden and pillar, this fortress also houses the Jami Masjid and a Baoli.

Safdarjung’s Tomb

Safdarjung’s Tomb is a mausoleum of Mughal Statesman Safdarjung and also a famous Mughal Architectural beauty. This tomb is made of sandstone and marble and considered as one of the few architectural marvels of the late Mughal period. It was built in 1753-54 on a less grand scale in the traditions of Humayun’s Tomb. Safdarjung was Prime Minister of Mughal Empire when Muhammad Shah was the Mughal ruler. This monument is preserved and maintained by Archaeological Survey of India whose office is located at the top storey of the Tomb.

Last tomb garden of the Mughals, It was built with the tomb located in the middle of a huge square garden which is a Char Bagh plan. This Mughal garden is well maintained. This resembles the style of Humayun’s tomb with a nine-fold floor plan, and a large platform with hidden staircases. Other structures inside Safdarjung’s Tomb are Jangli Mahal, Badshah Pasand, and Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace).

Mehrauli Archaeological Park is one of the least explored but rich heritage spaces in Delhi. Spreading across 200 acres in Mehrauli, this archaeological park is located near the Qutab complex. It houses more than 100 historical monuments and only area in Delhi which existed with continuous years of occupation for 1000 years. These monuments here ante back to the 11th century and as late as the British time.  Oldest surviving fort of Delhi, Lal Kot which was built by Tomar Rajputs in 1060 CE is located inside this archaeological park. However, this fort is now available in ruins.

Lal Kot, Balban’s Tomb, Rajon Ki Baoli, Gandhak Ki Baoli, Madhi Masjid, Quli Khan’s Tomb and Jamali Kamali Masjid and Tomb are some of the famous monumental structures of this archaeological park. These monuments belong to the time of Khaljis, Tughlaqs, Lodhis, Mughals, and Britishers. These monuments are scattered in the 220-acre area and mainly was in pathetic conditions. But restoration program in 1997 restored some of the 40 monuments.

It is also listed among the haunted places in Delhi. It is advisable not to visit after sunset. This park is a nice picnic spot to hang out with family during the afternoon. The area around Rose Park is well maintained which is full of greenery. Visit this place if you are photographer geek because this is the perfect place for photography.

Tughlaqabad Fort

The ruined fort of Tughlaqabad is located in the medieval city of Tughlaqabad built by Ghiyasud-din Tughlaq, the founder of Tughlaq dynasty. This city was abandoned in 1327 due to scarcity of water. Located on the historical Mehrauli- Badarpur road and spread on the both sides of the road, this fort is spread across an area of 6.5 Km. Tughlaqabad Fort is a massive structure built of stone with hard enclosures about 10-15 metres high. Originally this fort city had 52 gates but presently only 13 gates are surviving.

There is a famous legend behind Tughlaqabad Fort that Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq needed every labourer in the area to build the fort, but one of the Sufi saints Nizamuddin Auliya cursed that may the fort remain unoccupied or else may herdsmen live here. People still believed that due to that curse fort remained abandoned till date.

Whole Fort area is divided into three sections. First area is wide rectangular area where houses were built. Second area consists of Bijai-Mandal, highest point of the citadel with a tower, remains of halls, and underground passages. Third area adjacent to second area is palace area where you can find royal residences.

Most of the structures are in ruins and inaccessible due to dense forests. Palaces and citadels, massive fortifications, the great gateways, and mausoleums make this a must visit destination in Delhi. You can also enjoy your picnic with family and take a monumental tour. Since this complex is huge, it will take 3 hours to complete your whole tour of the fort.  The Surface is uneven, thorny, so it advised to prepare yourself for long walking. Don’t visit this fort in summer afternoon as it can be very strenuous.

Hauz Khas Fort Complex

The Hauz Khas Fort Complex with the dazzling beauty of a lake is a famous tourist attraction in Delhi. Hauz Khas consist is a composite site which houses a tank and various other attractions like madrasa, tomb and mosque. Also known as Mehak Ka Chota Quila, this fort complex is a perfect spot for picnic, animal watching, nature walk and walk through history.

Hauz-i –Alai, a tank was constructed by Ala-ud-din Khalji in 1300 to store the rainwater so that the water was distributed in Siri, then capital of Khilji Dynasty. Later Feroz Shah Tughlaq refurbished the tank due to the necessity of water and the original tank gradually dried up and abandoned. He also built a number of other structures including mosque, tomb and a madrasa. This site ultimately became famous as Hauz Khas.

Some scenes of famous Bollywood movie Rockstar was shouted in the Hauz Khas Fort. Deer Park is another attraction in this area, through which you can reach the beautiful lake. It is divided into 4 parts: rose Garden, Hauz Khas market, Old monument, Deer Park and Fountain and District Park.

Hauz Khas is a cosmopolitan area which has both residential and commercial hubs. Famous for shopping places, restaurants, pubs and clubs, this place is a mix of everything. You can take a good romantic walk in fort complex and deer park and after head to a good restaurant for healthy meal. Hauz Khas is a perfect example of how can a series of monuments abandoned for centuries have emerged as a major tourist hub of Delhi.

National Museum

One of the largest museums in India, National Museum in New Delhi was established in 1949. Also known as National Museum of India, it owns about 200,000 articles ranging from pre-historic age to modern age, comprising over 5000 years. Gwyer Committee prepared the blueprint of the National Museum in 1946. This museum is located on Janpath near Rajpath and operates under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. National Museum Institute of History of Arts, Conservation and Museology is situated on the first floor of National Museum building.

National Museum has several departments and Galleries. Some of the most important galleries are Harappan Gallery, Maurya and Post Mauryan Gallery, Gupta and Medieval Arts Gallery, Decorative Arts and Miniature Paintings Gallery, Indian Scripts, Coins and Manuscripts Gallery and other galleries which have foreign articles. Besides the galleries, the museum also has a library and an auditorium.

When you enter the Museum premises, you will see the statue of Sun god which belongs to 13th century. You can also see Ashokan Edicts just outside the main gate of Museum building. You can see the coins, various artifacts and sculptures, old jewellery, weapons, instruments and various other historical articles. So, if you have interest in history, you must pay a visit to this awesome museum. Audio guides are also available here and one day is insufficient to complete the whole tour of the museum.

National Rail Museum

The National Rail Museum in Delhi is an exclusive Museum which represents the Rail heritage of India. This museum is opened in 1977 and has a spellbinding and peculiar collection of over 100 real size models of Indian Railways. Having both indoor and outdoor exhibits, this museum focuses on providing information about the history of Indian Railways.

Indoor exhibits displayed the static and working models, antique furniture, historical data, signalling equipments, photographs, and other relevant documents. Outside, you can witness the Prince of Wales’ Saloon built in 1875; Maharaja of Mysore’s Saloon built in 1899 and off course the Fairy Queen built in 1855 and one of the best protected steam locomotive engines of that time. A ride in a toy train and mono rail (PSMT) is the most interesting things to do in this museum. This museum is the must visit place for kids and rail freaks. Spreading across an area of nearly 150 acres, Pragati Maidan is a gigantic complex cum exhibition center in New Delhi. Owned and managed by Indian Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO), Pragati Maidan is the largest exhibition center in Delhi. Pragati Maidan has 16 big and spacious halls, well-paved roads, gardens and lawns, and restaurants.

Built to celebrate the Silver Jubilee celebration of India’s Independence, Pragati Maidan is certainly an epochal structure. Pragati Maidan hosts one of the best expo in the world like Indian International Trade Fair, World Book Fair, Auto Expo, Defence Expo etc.

The whole complex is filled with halls and green lawns and gardens. There are two eating outlets inside Pragati Maidan and temporary outlets are established during events. Pragati Maidan is also famous for the Son of India Pavilion, Defence Pavilion and Shakuntalam which is a movie theatre. India Gandhi Memorial Museum

Built as a tribute to the first female prime minister of India Indira Gandhi, Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum displays the Indian Independence Movement and the contribution of Indira Gandhi to Independent India. She was known as the Iron Lady of India and on October 31, 1984, she was shot by her own bodyguards.

This Museum was originally the residence of Indira Gandhi which was later converted into Museum, after her assassination. You can see the rare pictures of Independence movement; sari wore by her during her assassination and a crystal plate with the brown spots of her blood. Museum also displays the life of Indira Gandhi and some rare photographs of Nehru family.

The Indira Gandhi Memorial incorporates a library and a living room. These rooms are well furnished and in the same condition in which Indira Gandhi kept them. You can view these spaces through windows from the lawn as these areas are not open for general public.

This museum should be in bucket list on your visit to Delhi. It is must visit to learn about the life of the Iron lady of India.

National Gallery of Modern Art

One of the most tranquil public buildings of Delhi, National Gallery of Modern Art is no less than heaven for art lovers. Established in the year 1954 at Jaipur House in Delhi, this gallery is managed and maintained by Ministry Of Culture. There are two other branches of NGMA at Bangalore and Mumbai. Spreading across an area of 12,000 square metres, this gallery has a collection of about 14,000 artworks from the 1850s onwards. National Gallery of Modern Art was established to collect and preserve works of Modern Art. This Gallery is also dedicated to organise, maintain and establish galleries for permanent display.

This Gallery has a large number of collections of paintings, graphics, sculptures and photographs by Indian as well as International Modern Artists. The Works of Rabindranath Tagore, Gaganendranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Raja Ravi Verma, Thomas Deniell, Jamini Roy, Abanindranath Tagore and Amrita Sher-Gill are available in the galleries of NGMA. You can also find the works of D.C. Daja, Kozo Mio, Fred Theiler, Sonia Delaunay, Se Duk Lee, George Keyt, Peter Lubarda and Jacob Epstein.

NGMA is well equipped with Art Reference Library, a Restoration service, a Documentation Centre, a preview theatre, conservation laboratory and a new auditorium. NGMA also organises special exhibitions, lectures, seminars and conferences to encourage people to take interest in the field of art history and museology. This gallery is well maintained and organised by Ministry of Culture.

A cultural center with an amphitheatre, an auditorium, library and resource centre, the lotus pond and restaurants, Indian Habitat Centre offers you a little bit of everything. This space is used by the general public for meetings, presentations, art exhibitions, theatre plays, and get together. This place is famous for changing the traditional outlook of an office into a more modernistic environment. IHC offers a great range of facilities in order to achieve its goal to provide an environment where individuals and institutions working in different areas can be cooperative.

IHC is the brainchild of Joseph Allen Stein, an American architect. In his memory auditorium of IHC is named after him and it is one of the best auditorium in the country. A library and resource centre is also available in Indian Habitat Centre. Open air complex is one of the must visit where you can enjoy the performance of artists from the field of music and theatre. IHC also has an art gallery which houses a range of paintings. If you want to enjoy the nature, there is a lotus pond where you can find fishes and ducks which is another serene beauty. IHC also has a lot of restaurants; some are reserved for members while other restaurants can be visited by nonmembers also.

The Dilli Haat is a replica of rural Haat or village market where you can find clothes, handicrafts and other everyday use items from all over the India.  Dilli Haat is more a handicraft bazaar and open air food court where you can enjoy a tour of Indian Culture. Maintained and run by Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC), Dilli Haat represents the prosperity of Indian culture on a permanent basis.

Dilli Haat also organise cultural events by various state departments and theatre programs. There are a lot of stalls which sells handicraft products from all over the country. An open air food court offers you a variety of cuisines from all over India states. Every state has its own food court and if you want to explore the all over India at one place, this is the place for you.

If you are lucky you can run into an exhibition or a theatre performance. It is advised that you should have bargaining skill if you are going to shop, because these products are expensive.

Air Force Museum

Palam Air Force Station has the Air Force Museum which is one of its kinds until Goa Naval Aviation Museum established in 1998. This museum is usually explored by very little number of visitors. This museum not only gives you the picture of Air Force history but a complete history of Military Aviation in India.

This museum is divided into two sections – an annexe and the main hangar. History of Indian Air Force is designed in a pictorial form when you enter the annexe. You can see the photographs of some of the gems of Indian Air Force in various uniforms in Indoor display. There are also photographs of officers who fought immensely during WWII. You can also see the small arms like pistols and revolvers captured by Indian Defence Forces during operations in 1966 and 1971.

In the hanger section, there are a number of classic aircrafts, helicopters, jet engines and recovered enemy aircrafts and tanks. Some of the heavy aircrafts, helicopters, and jet aircrafts like Sukhoi Su7, MIG 21 and 23 are placed out of the hanger. You will love to see some of the vintage aircrafts of WW time if you are airplane enthusiasts.

There are also showcases which contain the models of various aircrafts, swords presented to Air Force officials, and models of tanks. So if you are a defense geek, you must visit this awesome museum and know about the history of Indian Air Force.

Nehru Museum and Planetarium

Nehru Museum and Planetarium is situated at the former residence of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, first Prime Minister of India. This building is known as Teen Murti Bhawan which is located on Teen Murti Marg and an excellent piece of architecture in New Delhi. Teen Murti Bhavan was built by Robert Tor Russell, a British architect in 1930 as the residence of the Commander-in-Chief of the British Indian Army. After Independence, this became the official residence of Prime Minister of India and Jawaharlal Nehru was then PM of India. After his death in 1964, this Bhavan was converted into a memorial devoted to him.

Nehru Museum includes his bedroom, drawing room and study room kept exactly as they were at that time. Museum displays his life in the form of photographs. You can also explore the building which is worth visiting due to its huge roofs, cavernous verandas, teak panels, and beautifully maintained gardens. This museum is explored by thousands of tourists throughout the year.

Apart from the Museum, this building also houses Nehru Memorial, Library and Planetarium. Nehru library consist of books from diverse fields like economics, religion, sociology, culture, politics and development of India. You can also find old journals, rare periodicals, pre-independence newspapers, and manuscripts collection.

Nehru Planetarium in New Delhi is one of the five planetariums in India named after Jawaharlal Nehru. Other four planetariums are located in Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Allahabad.  Planetarium organises shows on astronomy, Space Programs of India, the Universe.  These shows are organised on regular basis everyday with interactive sessions.

When you visit Delhi, Swaminarayan Akshardham Complex should be on the top of your bucket list. This amazingly beautiful temple complex and cultural centre is a must visit site and one shouldn’t miss this architectural marvel. One of the largest temples in the world, Akshardham Temple attracts most of the tourists who visit Delhi. It has awe-inspiring architecture, an excellent exhibition with an explanatory boat ride and a documentary, a huge beautiful garden, a breathtaking water show and a spacious food court which gives you the opportunity to taste the diverse range of cuisines.

Akshardham, a divine abode of God built by BAPS and opened in 2005 by Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam. Over 8000 volunteers from all around the world participated in the construction of this temple complex. Dedicated to Bhagwan Swaminarayan (1781-1830), this complex house of approx 200 idols and made an appearance in Guinness Book of World Records for World’s Largest Comprehensive Hindu Temple.

When you enter the premises, there are welcome gates (Bhakti Dwar and Mayur Dwar), visitor centre, and thematic gardens before Main Temple. The main Temple is located in the heart of the complex and can be visited by two routes: one after completing exhibitions and second directly after visiting thematic gardens. Exhibitions are displayed in three large halls and it takes 2-3 hours to complete the whole exhibition tour. Water show starts just after sunset and it is a 24 minutes show. This temple complex with its exhibitions, water shows, and alluring architecture can take you to the new cultural world.

Lotus Temple

One of the most visited place in the world and perfectly famous tourist place of India, Lotus Temple is a piece of architectural beauty dedicated to the Bahai Faith. One of the seven Baha’i House of Worship present around the world, Lotus Temple is built in the shape of a lotus flower with using white marble. Regardless of their region and caste, everyone can visit and pray in Lotus Temple. The design of Lotus Temple was developed by Fariborz Sahba, a Canadian architect and was built in 1986.

According to the Baha’i faith, all religions and people are united and Baha’i House of Worship should be a place where people of all religions can worship. By maintaining silence inside the temple anyone can pray their respective god in peaceful manner. Any kind of rituals and reading non-scriptural texts are prohibited.

As you enter the premises, you can see the entrance and huge garden leading to main temple. The main temple building is constructed of 27 free-standing marble petals and 9 gates. The main hall can afford 2500 people at a time.

For its architectural beauty, Lotus temple has won a number of awards. It was the most visited building in the world in 2001 as a CNN report said. By April 2014, 100 million tourists visited Lotus temple which makes it one of the most visited architectural place in the world.

You can spend some peaceful time in the central hall and also admire the beauty of sparkling pools. It is advised to keep quiet inside the hall as making noise is prohibited. Photography is not allowed inside the hall. Put your shoes outside the temple at the counter.

Laxminarayan Temple (Birla Mandir)

Laxminarayan Temple of Delhi is one of the major tourist destinations in Delhi due to its spacious, architectural and religious significance. This temple is also known as Birla Mandir as the temple was built by Birla Family. It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Narayan (Lord Vishnu) and Goddess Laxmi. There is also a number of side temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna. First large Hindu temple of Delhi, it is spread across the area of 7.5 acres.

Laxminarayan Temple was constructed by Baldeo Das Birla in 1939 and was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi. Sris Chandra Chatterjee conceived the architecture of Birla Mandir which is based on modern technologies but it resembles the Nagara style of architecture. The temple premises and idols were made by marble transported from Jaipur, Kota, Makrana, Agra, and Jaisalamer.

Main Temple is carved with beautiful sculptures. This temple can give you the spiritual insight you needed as well as you are going to fascinate by the architectural delicacy of the temple. So must visit this temple to get yourself motivated with the spirituality of Laxminarayan Temple.

Shri Aadya Katyayani Shakti Peetha, popularly known as Chhatarpur Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to goddess Katyayani. Considered as the sixth avatar of goddess Durga, Goddesses Katyayani is the part of Navadurga. Temple is located just 1 Km walking distance from Chattarpur Metro station. It was considered as the second largest temple in the world and biggest in India before the construction of Akshardham Temple in 2005.

Chattarpur Temple was built in 1974 by Sant Shree Nagpal Ji who died in 1998. The entire temple complex is spread across both sides of the road in the whooping area of 60 acres. The Shrine of Shree Nagpal Ji is also lying in the temple complex in Shri- Gauri Nageshwar Mandir.

Chhatarpur Temple has a wonderful architecture which is a splendid amalgam of North and South Indian style. The entire temple complex is constructed from marble and resembles the Vesara style of architecture.  The temple complex is divided into three parts. The main temple is dedicated to goddesses Katyayani. Apart from the shrine, there is a Shayan Kaksha (Bed Room) and a prayer hall. There are also temples dedicated to Lord Rama, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Lord Hanumana. You can also see the giant idol of Lord Hanuman just opposite side of the main temple. This side of the complex houses the shrine of Baba Ji.

During Navaratri, Chattarpur receives a huge number of devotees. You have to wait for 2-3 hours to reach the main temple during Navaratri. Chattarpur Temple Administration also organises Bhandara regularly. This is one of the most visited temples in Delhi. So don’t forget to visit this temple when you are in Delhi.

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKON) is a Vaishnava Hindu spiritual institution founded by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in New York (USA) in 1966. This institution is responsible for the construction of various temples all across the world. One of the ISKON temples is located at Hare Krishna Hill in Delhi. This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and built in 1998 by Achyut Kanvinde.

This temple has splendid stonework on the outside and immaculate artwork on the inside. ISKON temple of Delhi with its beautiful architectural style attracts a number of tourists. The main temple houses the shrines of Lord Krishna and Radha, Lord Ram and Sita, and Lord Nitai and Gaura. These idols are embellished with clothes and heavy jewellery and maintained with great care. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is one of the most famous tourist places and pilgrimage spots of Delhi. This Gurudwara is dedicated to Guru Hari Kishan Sahib, eight Sikh Guru and worship place for Sikh believers. Bangla Sahib Gurudwara was first built by Sardar Baghel Singh in 1783 as a small shrine. This is the former palace of Guru Hari Kishan during his stay in Delhi in 1664.

One of the largest mosques in India, Jama Masjid of Delhi is a masterpiece of Mughal Architecture constructed by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Originally named as Masjid-I-Jahanuma, this mosque was built between 1644 and 1656 with the cost of around 1 million Rupees. This mosque was planned and designed by Ostad Khalil, a distinguished Mughal architect. The whole complex is built with white marble and red stone and has three huge gates and four towers. One of the Shah Jahan’s architectural marvels, Jama Masjid has the capacity of 25,000 people in the front space.

Situated in the densely populated area of Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid offers a splendid view of the city from its southern tower. Main Mosque building has three domes on the roof which are sided by the two towers. This huge central dome is an exceptional example of Islamic Architecture. You have to climb 121 steps to finally reach the entrance. More than 5000 workers worked during the construction of this massive piece of architectural beauty. Shah Jahan’s last architectural marvel, Masjid-e-Jahanuma literally meant the ‘Mosque commanding view of the World’.

During the time Eid and Bakrid, this mosque is filled with people to pray Namaz. Unfortunately, Non-Muslims are not allowed during prayer time. Visit Jama Masjid during morning hours when there are fewer crowds. Dress humbly and women should cover their head before entering mosque premises. One of the most famous tourist attractions in India, Nizamuddin Dargah is a holy shrine of world famous Sufi Saint, Hazrat Khwaja Syed Nizamuddin Auliya. He lived from 1238 to 1325 and was the successor of Baba Farid. Built in 1526, this dargah follows the Sufi tradition, according to which all religions are equal. Built from the red stone and white marble, the architecture of Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah is mesmerizing.

Nizamuddin Dargah complex consists of tombs of some of the famous people like Jahan Ara Begum, Inayat Khan and, Amir Khusro. Amir Khusro was the disciple of Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia. This shrine is visited by thousands of tourists every week. Since this is the tourist destination now, it is visited by people of all religions.

One of the most famous attractions of this Dargah is its famous Qawwali session. Qawwali is organised every night but the performance on Thursdays and Fridays are believed exceptional. This Dargah is actively helping the local people by providing basic stuff for living. Lodhi Garden is a Sultanate period Park which houses for some of the architectural works of that time. This stunning park and other architectural monuments are the works of 15th century mainly completed by Sayyid and Lodi rulers. Construction of the park was started and completed by Lodi rulers. This garden complex is located in the heart of Delhi near Safdarjung Tomb. The entire garden is spreading over an area of about 90 acres. This place is very popular among the morning walkers and families for picnics. Archaeological Survey of India is responsible for the maintenance of the garden.

Lodhi Garden has architectural monuments built by Sayyid and Lodi rulers of the 15th century. These monuments are Sikander Lodi’s Tomb, Mohammed Shah’s Tomb, Sheesh Gumbad’s and Bara Gumbad’s Tomb. This place is of great importance as there are very few architectural works of Sayyid rulers. An old waterway connects the Sikandar Lodi’s tomb to the River Yamuna.  Apart from these monuments garden is full of lush greenery and pleasant weather. Before Independence, this garden was known as ‘Lady Willingdon Park’ but it was renamed to its present name after Independence.

Sanjay Van is a protected city forest area in South Delhi which sprawls over an area of 784 acres. Sanjay Van has four entry gates: two from Qutab Institutional Are, one from Mehrauli area and last one from Aruna Asaf Ali Marg. Sanjay Van is one of the most densely forested areas in Delhi.

Situated in the lap of Aravali Hills, this forest is the home of many bird species and animals. This place is famous among bird watchers, nature lovers and cyclists. You can enjoy the peaceful walk in the forest, watch birds, water bodies, rocks established as selfie spots and a panoramic view of the forest from tower. You can also take a walk on the ruins of Qila Rai Pithora from where you can observe the mesmerizing view of Qutab Minar. This forest also houses a number of shrines of Sufi Saints. There is a temple inside the forest area.

Sanjay Van is considered as one of the most haunted places in Delhi. It is says that the spirit of Sufi Saint Hazrat Sheikh Shahabuddin Aashiq Allah walks along the path. Apart from this there are also stories about walking of women wearing white sari, crying and laughter. It is advisable not to go into the forest after sunset.

DDA with the help of citizen’s group is restoring Sanjay Van through a unique Collaboration so that this forest can be the spot for nature lovers. There is also an idea to convert this forest into a Bird Sanctuary but officials say that when there will enough birds in the forest it will be declared as Bird Sanctuary. There are 150 species of birds found here. If you want to spend time with nature or you are a bird watcher, this is the place for you.

Kamla Nehru Ridge popular known as The Ridge of North Campus is one of the four zones of Delhi Ridge. Other three zones of Delhi Ridge are Central Ridge (Sadar Bazaar to Dhaula Kuan), South-Central Ridge (Sanjay Van and JNU) and Southern Ridge (Tughlaqabad and Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary). Kamla Nehru Ridge is the smallest portion of the Delhi Ridge which was declared as the Reserved Forest in 1915.

Apart from the part of the Ridge, this area is also historically significant. There are lots of historical monuments from Ashokan times to British times. Such monuments are the Flagstaff Tower used as a signal tower during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, Ashokan Pillar carried by Firoz Shah Tughlaq from Meruth to Delhi in 1356, a Mutiny Memorial, Khooni Lake which was used as a water source and changed into red colour due to bloodshed, Pir Ghaib and Sarpakaar Jheel. However, Khooni Lake is not easy to find as it is very deep into the forest and occupied by thick woods.

This Forest is full of monkeys and diverse verities of birds. This place is a perfect place for couples. Early morning walks, sounds of birds and peaceful nature can make your soul clean. It is advised to keep away from monkeys as they are in the large group there. After exploring the Ridge must visit Pandit Jee ki Canteen for delicious breakfast loaded with meetha samosa and cold coffee.

Designed by Pradeep Sachdeva, a Delhi based Architect and built by DTTDC (Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation); Garden of Five is an answer to need for a common space for leisure activities. With a cost of 10.5 crore rupees, this park needed three years to complete which finally opened in February 2003. Situated in the heritage area of Mehrauli, Garden of five senses is partially build over a stony surface and has diverse theme areas. This garden also serves as a cultural centre and various events are organised here throughout the year.

Garden is developed to provide a space for activities, explorations, and communal interactions. Apart from the tourists, this garden is also a favourite spot for the locals. Garden is located on the rocky terrain which naturally gives it a slope. Garden of Five Senses is divided into separate theme areas. Khas Bagh, located on the side of the walkway is inspired by the Mughal Garden. Canals are following the path of the garden. As you lead yourself to the Central part, you can see the chain of fountains. Fountain Tree is a famous sculpture near the central part and one shouldn’t miss that.

Another side of the garden has shopping place and food court. Neel Bagh is another attraction on this side where you can see a pond full of water-lilies. Other attractions are Colour Gardens, The Courts of Specimen Plants and amphitheater. There are about 200 varieties of plants are planted and other existing vegetation left untouched.

Nature Walk is also organized in Garden of Five Senses by Delhi Tourism. This Garden is very famous among couples and it is filled with couples during weekends. So if you are nature lover then try not to forget this place.

Nehru Park in Chanakyapuri is a large park situated in the Diplomatic Enclave. This park has a lush green landscape and considered as one of the leading green areas in the Capital. Nehru Park also hosts various music concerts organised by NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Corporation).

Mughal Garden is well known for its verities of flowers like marigold, roses, sweet William, Viscaria, tulips, Asiatic lilies, daffodils and more. Some of these flowers are very rare.

Mughal Garden is considered as the soul of Rashtrapati Bhavan. This majestic garden is only open for public during the months of February and March.
